December 5, 2016

Dear Families,

I’m writing to let you know about the new Breakfast in the Classroom program in our school.
Beginning on Monday, December 12, 2016, our school will participate in an innovative program called Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC). BIC, as all breakfast in DOE, is free!  BIC was introduced to DOE elementary schools in an effort to alleviate hunger and ensure that all students are ready to learn each day. The citywide BIC rollout began its implementation in Kindergarten through 5th grade in NYC Public Schools following its success in over 300 NYC public schools as well as in major cities around the country. This program plays an essential role in the healthy cognitive, social, and emotional development of elementary school children.

Our school selected the classroom delivery from among the available BIC delivery options. Each day, breakfasts are packaged in insulated bags and delivered to each classroom by SchoolFood staff or student monitors to the classrooms. Children pick up a breakfast on their way into the classroom and eat at his or her desk while the teacher takes morning attendance, teaches a short lesson, or reads announcements. Children arriving to school late may also receive a breakfast to eat at an area designated by the principal. With this new program in place, students will no longer be allowed into the school building at 7:50 a.m. for breakfast. ALL students will begin the school day at 8:20 a.m. We will open the school doors at 8:10 a.m. each day beginning December 12th.

For more information about BIC, please see the enclosed Parent Community FAQ.  Please share this exciting news with your child and be ready on December 12th for the start of this new program!

Sincerely,

Ms. Grisel Rodriguez,

Principal
