Dear P.S. 82 Learning Community,

Our Book of the Month selection is Patricia Polacco’s, The Junkyard Wonders. Trisha is ready to start at a new school, where no one will know she has dyslexia. At first, she is devastated and heartbroken to be in Miss Peterson’s special-ed class, aka, “the junkyard.” She had moved from her old town so she wouldn't be in a special class anymore! But Miss Peterson treats the children as anything but junk, showing them that everyone has a unique talent. And it is here in The Junkyard that Trisha learns the true meaning of genius, and that this group of misfits are, in fact, wonders, all of them. Based on a real-life event in Patricia Polacco's childhood, this treasure to teachers will inspire all readers to find their inner genius. Polacco’s trademark style is fully present here; her sensitively drawn alter ego shines with depth of feeling.

When bullying occurs, Miss Peterson proves her students are worthwhile by planning a junkyard field trip, where they find valuable objects to be used in exciting ways. Trisha’s group repairs a plane, and the class buys an engine for it. Then a beloved class member dies, and the children must find a way to honor him. The characters are appealing, believable and provide a fine portrayal of a truly special group of students who are devoted to one another. The book encompasses both the themes of integrity and leadership, as the determined students of character work hard and take charge of their learning.

As we approach the end of the school year, this is an opportunity to remind your students how valuable they are and the potentials they have. Encourage them to take risks and be true to themselves and to stand up for what is right all the time. Ms. Peterson challenged, believed in and helped her students to discover their unique strengths. She showed them how to shine.

Some ideas and activities that you can use with your students have been uploaded to Google docs. Feel free to use them as needed and if you have some ideas of your own please share with your colleagues.

The text will be placed in your mailboxes.

Have fun reading.
